The Tygerberg Children's Hospital is being developed in the 10 story G-wing of the Tygerberg Academic Hospital, Tygerberg City.

The hospital supplies specialised care to half of the 1,2 million children and their families in the Western Cape Province and the Cape Metropole. Patrons of the hospital is Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mrs Leah Tutu.

The mission of the hospital is to provide the best possible care to newborns and children and to promote child health and the rights of children through advocacy, appropriate medical care, teaching and research.

Annually, 16 000 babies and children are admitted to the 330 paediatric beds and more than 100 000 outpatients are cared for. The TCH also supports paediatric care in African countries such as Namibia and Malawi. Special Services such as the TygerBear Social Work Unit for Traumatised Children and families, the Tygerberg Hospital School and Carel du Toit Centre where deaf babies and preschoolers learn to speak, are also available.

The Tygerberg Children's Hospital will achieve consolidation of the currently 330 widely dispersed children's beds into a single environment that is child and parent friendly. They would also like to achieve better care with available resources and an increased focus on child health and advocacy for child rights. A better business model and training resource also need to be achieved.

Research emphasis is on tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, cancer and the management of small neonates. To help these children, the hospital is in desperate need of equipment, structural changes and child support and services.
