Home   At the southernmost tip of Africa lies a country that is rich in history, splendour and beauty. A country that is rich in wildlife and mineral resources, one with a beautiful coastline and a cosmopolitan population. A country that has achieved so much in such a short period of time that it has became a world leader in many fields. Cape Town is the Mother City and home of some of South Africa's main attractions. Table Mountain guards the city, dazzling white beaches are washed by the surf of two oceans, Robben Island is situated to the north and beautiful vineyards are nature's finishing touch to a geological masterpiece. Sadly, since the first diagnosis of HIV was made in 1982, the country has also become part of a worldwide HIV epidemic affecting 3.9 million people of which 2.2 million are children. Currently South Africa constitutes approximately 5.3 million of this HIV infected population. The prevalence of HIV in antenatal clinics in South Africa is 27,4%, resulting in about 250 000 HIV-exposed infants per year. It is for this reason that Cape Town is also the home of KID CRU, the Children's Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Unit. The unit was established in 2002 and officially opened its doors in September 2003 as a research unit for clinical trials.
